- Buddy Holly (1936–1959) - American singer-songwriter known for hits such as "Peggy Sue" and "That'll Be the Day." Died in a plane crash.
- Ritchie Valens (1941–1959) - American musician known for songs like "La Bamba." Also died in the same plane crash as Buddy Holly.

- Brian Jones (1942–1969) - English musician and founding member of The Rolling Stones. Found dead in his swimming pool.
- Jimi Hendrix (1942–1970) - American guitarist and singer-songwriter known for his innovative approach to rock music. Died from a drug overdose.

- Jim Morrison (1943–1971) - American singer and poet, best known as the lead vocalist of The Doors. Died in Paris under mysterious circumstances.
- Janis Joplin (1943–1970) - American singer-songwriter known for her powerful blues-inspired vocals. Died of a heroin overdose.

- John Lennon (1940–1980) - English musician and co-founder of The Beatles. Shot and killed by a fan outside his apartment in New York City.
- Bon Scott (1946–1980) - Scottish-Australian singer best known as the lead vocalist of AC/DC. Died from acute alcohol poisoning.
1990s[edit | edit source]
- Kurt Cobain (1967–1994) - American musician and frontman of the band Nirvana. Committed suicide by gunshot.
- Jerry Garcia (1942–1995) - American musician and founding member of the Grateful Dead. Died of a heart attack.
