Steamed foods are a variety of dishes prepared by the method of steaming, a cooking technique that uses hot steam to conduct the heat to the food. This method of cooking is prevalent in many cultures due to its health benefits and the unique texture it gives to food. This is a list of notable steamed foods and dishes.

Dumplings[edit | edit source]

Steamed dumplings are common in various cuisines including Chinese, Korean, and Nepalese.

Baozi, also known as bao, is a type of yeast-leavened filled bun in various Chinese cuisines. There are many variations in fillings (meat or vegetarian) and preparations, though the buns are most often steamed.

Idli[edit | edit source]

Idli is a type of savoury rice cake, originating from the Indian subcontinent, popular as breakfast foods in Southern India and among Indian-origin Tamils in Sri Lanka. The cakes are usually two to three inches in diameter and are made by steaming a batter consisting of fermented black lentils and rice.

Tamales[edit | edit source]

Tamales are a traditional Mexican dish made of masa (a dough made from corn) that's filled with meats, cheese, or fruits, then wrapped in a corn husk and steamed.

Haggis[edit | edit source]

Haggis is a savoury pudding containing sheep's pluck (heart, liver, and lungs); minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally encased in the animal's stomach and steamed.

Rice and its Variations[edit | edit source]

Rice is often steamed to accompany other dishes, but it can also be the main ingredient in dishes like sticky rice, rice pudding, and sushi.
