List of steamed foods
Steamed foods are a variety of dishes prepared by the method of steaming, a cooking technique that uses hot steam to conduct the heat to the food. This method of cooking is prevalent in many cultures due to its health benefits and the unique texture it gives to food. This is a list of notable steamed foods and dishes.
Steamed Foods[edit]
Dumplings[edit]
Dumplings are a broad class of dishes that consist of pieces of dough wrapped around a filling, or dough with no filling. The dough can be based on bread, flour or potatoes, and may be filled with meat, fish, cheese, vegetables, fruits or sweets. Steamed dumplings are common in various cuisines including Chinese, Korean, and Nepalese.
Baozi[edit]
Baozi, also known as bao, is a type of yeast-leavened filled bun in various Chinese cuisines. There are many variations in fillings (meat or vegetarian) and preparations, though the buns are most often steamed.
Idli[edit]
Idli is a type of savoury rice cake, originating from the Indian subcontinent, popular as breakfast foods in Southern India and among Indian-origin Tamils in Sri Lanka. The cakes are usually two to three inches in diameter and are made by steaming a batter consisting of fermented black lentils and rice.
Tamales[edit]
Tamales are a traditional Mexican dish made of masa (a dough made from corn) that's filled with meats, cheese, or fruits, then wrapped in a corn husk and steamed.
Haggis[edit]
Haggis is a savoury pudding containing sheep's pluck (heart, liver, and lungs); minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally encased in the animal's stomach and steamed.
Rice and its Variations[edit]
Rice is often steamed to accompany other dishes, but it can also be the main ingredient in dishes like sticky rice, rice pudding, and sushi.
