List of steroidal estrogens

Steroidal estrogens are a subclass of estrogens that are synthesized from cholesterol. They are the primary female sex hormones. Steroidal estrogens are responsible for the development and maintenance of female secondary sexual characteristics, but they also have important roles in the menstrual cycle and in pregnancy.

List of Steroidal Estrogens[edit | edit source]

1. Estrone - A naturally occurring estrogen, it is produced primarily in the ovaries. It is also produced in smaller amounts by the adrenal glands and by fat cells in both men and women.

2. Estradiol - The most potent and prevalent estrogen in reproductive-aged women. It is produced in the ovaries and is responsible for the development of female secondary sexual characteristics.

3. Estriol - The primary estrogen of pregnancy, it is produced by the placenta. It is less potent than estradiol and estrone.

4. Ethinylestradiol - A synthetic estrogen used in many formulations of combined oral contraceptive pills. It is also used in hormonal therapy for menopausal symptoms and in transgender hormone therapy.

5. Mestranol - A prodrug of ethinylestradiol, it is used in some oral contraceptives.

6. Quinestrol - A synthetic estrogen used for hormonal therapy in menopausal symptoms and in birth control pills.

7. Polyestradiol phosphate - A polymer of estradiol, it is used for hormonal therapy in prostate cancer.

8. Estradiol valerate - An ester of estradiol, it is used in hormonal therapy for menopausal symptoms, in hormone therapy for transgender women, and in hormonal birth control.

9. Estradiol cypionate - Another ester of estradiol, it is used in hormonal therapy for menopausal symptoms, in hormone therapy for transgender women, and in veterinary medicine.

10. Estradiol benzoate - Yet another ester of estradiol, it is used in hormonal therapy for menopausal symptoms and in veterinary medicine.
