Livingston Farrand (June 14, 1867 – November 8, 1939) was an American physician, anthropologist, and public health advocate. He is best known for his contributions to public health and his leadership roles in various academic and health institutions.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Livingston Farrand was born in Newark, New Jersey. He attended Princeton University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1888. He later pursued medical studies at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, graduating in 1891.

Anthropology[edit | edit source]

Farrand initially worked in the field of anthropology, conducting research and fieldwork. He was associated with the American Museum of Natural History and contributed to the study of Native American cultures.

Public Health[edit | edit source]

Farrand's career took a significant turn towards public health. He became a prominent figure in the National Tuberculosis Association (now the American Lung Association), where he worked to combat tuberculosis through public education and policy advocacy.

Academic Leadership[edit | edit source]

Farrand served as the president of the University of Colorado from 1914 to 1919. During his tenure, he focused on expanding the university's programs and improving its infrastructure.

In 1921, Farrand was appointed as the fourth president of Cornell University, a position he held until 1937. His leadership at Cornell was marked by efforts to enhance the university's academic reputation and financial stability.
