Losartan/hydrochlorothiazide

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Losartan/hydrochlorothiazide is a medication combination used to treat high blood pressure. It contains two active ingredients: Losartan, an angiotensin II receptor antagonist, and Hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Losartan is a type of medication known as an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. It works by blocking the action of certain natural substances that tighten the blood vessels, allowing the blood to flow more smoothly and the heart to pump more efficiently. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic (water pill) that helps prevent your body from absorbing too much salt, which can cause fluid retention.

Uses[edit | edit source]

This combination medication is used to treat high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. This product contains two medications: losartan and hydrochlorothiazide. Losartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) and works by relaxing blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily. Hydrochlorothiazide is a "water pill" (diuretic) that causes you to make more urine, which helps your body get rid of extra salt and water.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Some common side effects of Losartan/hydrochlorothiazide include dizziness, lightheadedness, or upset stomach as your body adjusts to the medication. Serious side effects are rare, but may include fainting, symptoms of a high potassium blood level (such as muscle weakness, slow/irregular heartbeat), or decreased sexual ability.
