Lu'an Melon Seed tea

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Lu'an Melon Seed tea (also known as Lu'an Guapian tea or simply Guapian) is a type of green tea originating from Lu'an City, Anhui Province, China. It is one of the most famous teas in China and has been praised for its unique shape and rich flavor.

History[edit | edit source]

Lu'an Melon Seed tea has a history dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907), where it was a tribute tea. The tea became particularly popular during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and was often presented to the royal court as a gift.

Production[edit | edit source]

The production process of Lu'an Melon Seed tea is complex and requires a high level of skill. The tea leaves are picked in the spring, typically in late April to early May. Only the second leaf on the tea branch is picked, and the leaves are then pan-fired to stop the oxidation process. The leaves are shaped into a flat, oval shape that resembles a melon seed, hence the name.

Taste[edit | edit source]

Lu'an Melon Seed tea is known for its bright green color and rich, full-bodied flavor. The tea has a sweet, slightly nutty taste with a refreshing aftertaste. It is often described as having a "melon seed" flavor, which is where it gets its name.

Health Benefits[edit | edit source]

Like other green teas, Lu'an Melon Seed tea is rich in antioxidants and has many potential health benefits. These include improving heart health, aiding in weight loss, and reducing the risk of certain types of cancer.
