Lymphoid enhancer-binding factor 1
Lymphoid enhancer-binding factor 1 (LEF1) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the LEF1 gene. LEF1 is a member of the lymphoid enhancer-binding factor/T-cell factor (LEF/TCF) family of transcription factors, which play a crucial role in Wnt signaling and cellular differentiation.
Function[edit | edit source]
LEF1 is a nuclear protein that binds to the enhancer region of the T-cell receptor alpha gene. It is involved in the regulation of gene expression, cell proliferation, and differentiation. LEF1 is known to interact with beta-catenin, a key mediator in the Wnt signaling pathway, to regulate the transcription of target genes.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Alterations in the expression of LEF1 have been associated with several types of cancer, including colorectal cancer, breast cancer, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Overexpression of LEF1 can lead to increased cell proliferation and tumorigenesis, while its downregulation can inhibit tumor growth.
