M-chlorophenylpiperazine

From WikiMD's Wellnesspedia

M-chlorophenylpiperazine (mCPP) is a psychoactive drug and research chemical of the piperazine chemical class that was first synthesized in the early 1970s. It is known for its serotonin receptor agonist properties and has been used in the study of serotonin and its related neurotransmitters.

Chemistry[edit | edit source]

M-chlorophenylpiperazine is a derivative of phenylpiperazine, a type of piperazine which is a class of compounds with a core structure composed of a six-membered ring containing two nitrogen atoms at opposite positions in the ring. The "m-chloro" prefix in the name refers to a chlorine atom attached to the phenyl ring at the meta position.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

M-chlorophenylpiperazine is known to have serotonin receptor agonist activity, meaning it can stimulate the activity of serotonin receptors in the brain. This can lead to a variety of effects, including changes in mood, perception, and behavior. It has been particularly studied for its effects on the 5-HT2A receptor, which is thought to be involved in the regulation of mood and anxiety.

Medical Use[edit | edit source]

While mCPP has been used in scientific research, it does not have any recognized medical use. However, it has been found in some designer drugs and is sometimes used as a substitute for MDMA (ecstasy) in illicit drug markets. Its use in this context can be dangerous due to its potential for causing serotonin syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition characterized by high body temperature, agitation, increased reflexes, tremor, sweating, dilated pupils, and diarrhea.

Legal Status[edit | edit source]

In many countries, including the United States, mCPP is a controlled substance due to its potential for abuse and its lack of recognized medical use. In the United States, it is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act.
