MEKK1

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

MEKK1 (Mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase 1) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the MAP3K1 gene. It is part of the MAPK/ERK pathway, which is an important cell signaling pathway involved in cell growth, differentiation, and survival.

Function[edit | edit source]

MEKK1 is a member of the MAP kinase kinase kinase (MAP3K) family. The protein is found in the cytoplasm and is a component of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signal transduction pathway. It is involved in a wide variety of cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation, transcription regulation and development.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Mutations in the MAP3K1 gene have been associated with cancer, specifically breast cancer and ovarian cancer. The protein's role in the MAPK/ERK pathway, which is often dysregulated in cancer, makes it a potential target for cancer therapy.

Interactions[edit | edit source]
