Mabel Isabel Wilcox
Mabel Isabel Wilcox (1895–1978) was a pioneering nurse and public health advocate in Hawaii. She played a significant role in the development of healthcare services on the island of Kauai and was instrumental in the establishment of the Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital.

Mabel Isabel Wilcox was born on November 4, 1895, in Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii. She was a member of the prominent Wilcox family, which had significant influence in the region. Her parents were George Norton Wilcox and Emma Kauikeolani Wilcox.

Wilcox pursued her education in nursing at the School of Nursing at Columbia University in New York City. She graduated in 1917 and returned to Hawaii to begin her career in public health.

Upon her return to Hawaii, Wilcox worked as a public health nurse on Kauai. She was dedicated to improving healthcare services and addressing the needs of the local population. In 1926, she became the first nurse employed by the Hawaii Territorial Board of Health.
Wilcox was a key figure in the establishment of the Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital in Kapaa, Kauai. The hospital was founded in 1917 and named in honor of her cousin, Samuel Mahelona, who died of tuberculosis. Wilcox served as the hospital's superintendent and was instrumental in its development and expansion.
