Mark Rober was born in Orange County, California. He developed an interest in engineering and science at a young age. Rober attended Brigham Young University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering.

Rober began his career as an engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). During his nine years at JPL, he worked on several projects, including the Mars Science Laboratory and the Curiosity rover.
