Metkephamid

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Metkephamid is a pharmaceutical drug that was developed for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders. It is a dopamine antagonist and has been used in the management of nausea and vomiting, as well as for the treatment of gastroparesis.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Metkephamid acts by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain and gastrointestinal tract, which helps to control nausea and vomiting. It also increases the speed at which the stomach empties into the intestines, which can help with gastroparesis.

Clinical Use[edit | edit source]

Metkephamid has been used in the treatment of various gastrointestinal disorders. It is particularly effective in managing symptoms of gastroparesis, such as nausea, vomiting, and feeling of fullness after eating only a small amount of food.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Like all medications, Metkephamid can cause side effects. Common side effects include drowsiness, restlessness, and diarrhea. In rare cases, it can cause serious side effects such as tardive dyskinesia, a disorder that involves involuntary movements.

History[edit | edit source]

Metkephamid was developed in the late 20th century as a treatment for gastrointestinal disorders. Despite its effectiveness, it has largely been replaced by newer drugs that have fewer side effects.
