Metro Manila


Metro Manila (officially known as the National Capital Region) is the capital region of the Philippines. It is the most populous region in the country, and is the center for culture, economy, education, and government.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Metro Manila is located on the eastern coast of Luzon, the largest and most populous island in the Philippines. It is bordered by the provinces of Bulacan to the north, Rizal to the east, Laguna to the south, and Cavite to the west. The region is composed of 16 cities and 1 municipality, including the capital city of the Philippines, Manila.

The history of Metro Manila is intertwined with the history of the Philippines. The region was originally inhabited by Tagalog people before the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century. During the Spanish colonial period, Manila became the capital of the Spanish East Indies and the center of Spanish colonial rule in Asia. After the Philippine Revolution and the subsequent American colonial period, Manila continued to serve as the capital of the Philippines.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Metro Manila is the economic hub of the Philippines, contributing a significant portion of the country's GDP. The region is home to the headquarters of many multinational corporations, banks, and financial institutions. Major industries in Metro Manila include services, retail, real estate, manufacturing, and finance.

Culture[edit | edit source]

The culture of Metro Manila is a blend of indigenous Filipino, Spanish, American, and Asian influences. The region is known for its vibrant arts scene, with numerous museums, galleries, theaters, and cultural festivals. Metro Manila is also the center of the Philippine film and television industry.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Metro Manila has a complex and diverse transportation system, which includes public buses, jeepneys, tricycles, taxis, and the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT) systems. The region is also served by the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, the main international gateway to the Philippines.

Metro Manila is the educational center of the Philippines, with numerous universities, colleges, and schools. Notable educational institutions in the region include the University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University, and De La Salle University.

Government[edit | edit source]

The government of Metro Manila is unique among the regions of the Philippines. Unlike other regions, which are composed of provinces, Metro Manila is composed of cities and a municipality, each of which has its own local government.
