University of the Philippines (UP) is the national university system of the Philippines. Founded by the American colonial government on June 18, 1908, for the Filipinos, it has grown from a small public institution to one of the most prestigious and highly regarded university systems in the country. UP is known for its rigorous admission standards, academic excellence, and active contribution to national development.

The University of the Philippines was established through the enactment of Act No. 1870 by the Philippine Legislature, known as the "University Act", which aimed to provide advanced instruction in literature, philosophy, the sciences, and arts, and to give professional and technical training to eligible students regardless of age, sex, nationality, religious belief, and political affiliation. The first university president was Murray S. Bartlett. UP began its operations on June 18, 1908, with the School of Fine Arts, College of Liberal Arts, and College of Medicine constituting the first academic units.

Campuses[edit | edit source]

UP has grown to encompass multiple campuses across the Philippines, each known as a constituent university (CU) with its own administration. The system's flagship campus is University of the Philippines Diliman located in Quezon City, which serves as the administrative seat. Other significant campuses include University of the Philippines Los Baños in Laguna, known for its agricultural and forestry programs; University of the Philippines Manila, the health sciences center; University of the Philippines Visayas with campuses in Iloilo, Miagao, and Tacloban, focusing on fisheries, marine sciences, and regional studies; University of the Philippines Mindanao in Davao City, offering programs tailored to the region's needs; University of the Philippines Baguio, the center for Cordillera studies; and University of the Philippines Cebu, offering programs in communication, business, and information technology.

UP offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs through its various colleges and schools. It is renowned for its programs in law, engineering, natural sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities, and health sciences. The university is also home to the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), a leading government medical center and the UP College of Medicine's teaching hospital.
