Michel Sarrazin
French-Canadian surgeon and naturalist
Michel Sarrazin (5 September 1659 – 8 September 1734) was a pioneering French-Canadian surgeon and naturalist known for his contributions to the early scientific exploration of New France. He was instrumental in the development of medical practices in the region and made significant contributions to the study of the local flora and fauna.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Michel Sarrazin was born in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Burgundy, France. He pursued his medical studies in Paris, where he was trained in the latest medical techniques of the time. His education in Paris provided him with a strong foundation in both medicine and natural history, which would later influence his work in New France.
Career in New France[edit | edit source]
In 1685, Sarrazin was appointed as a surgeon to the colonial troops in New France. He arrived in Quebec and quickly became involved in the medical and scientific community. Sarrazin's work as a surgeon was highly regarded, and he was known for his skill in treating a variety of ailments.
