Michelada

Michelada is a traditional Mexican cocktail that combines beer, lime juice, and assorted sauces, spices, and peppers. It is served in a chilled, salt-rimmed glass. There are numerous variations of this drink throughout Mexico and Latin America.

The origin of the Michelada is somewhat disputed, but it is believed to have originated in Mexico. The name Michelada is thought to be a combination of the words "mi" (my), "chela" (slang for beer in Mexico), "helada" (frozen). Thus, Michelada roughly translates to "my cold beer".

The basic ingredients of a Michelada are:

  • Beer: A light, lager-style beer is typically used.
  • Lime juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice adds a tart flavor.
  • Sauces: This can include hot sauce, soy sauce, or Worcestershire sauce.

  • Peppers: Jalapeno or serrano peppers can be used for an extra kick.

There are many variations of the Michelada, including:

  • Michelada Cubana: This version includes a splash of Maggi seasoning or soy sauce.
  • Chelada: A simpler version of the Michelada, the Chelada contains only beer and lime juice.
  • Clamato Michelada: This version includes Clamato juice, a blend of clam and tomato juices.

To prepare a Michelada, the rim of the glass is typically rubbed with lime juice and then dipped in salt. The other ingredients are then added to the glass, followed by the beer. The drink is stirred gently to mix the ingredients.
