Minnesota Grape Growers Association
Minnesota Grape Growers Association
The Minnesota Grape Growers Association (MGGA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and support of viticulture and winemaking in the state of Minnesota. Established in 1976, the MGGA serves as a resource for grape growers, winemakers, and enthusiasts, providing education, advocacy, and networking opportunities.
History[edit | edit source]
The MGGA was founded in 1976 by a group of pioneering grape growers who recognized the potential for viticulture in Minnesota's unique climate. The association has since grown to include hundreds of members, ranging from commercial vineyards and wineries to hobbyists and researchers.
Mission[edit | edit source]
The mission of the MGGA is to advance the art and science of growing grapes and making wine in Minnesota. This includes promoting the development of cold-hardy grape varieties, supporting research and education, and advocating for policies that benefit the grape and wine industry in the state.
Activities[edit | edit source]
The MGGA engages in a variety of activities to support its mission, including:
- Organizing the annual Cold Climate Conference, which brings together experts in viticulture and enology to share knowledge and advancements.
- Providing educational workshops and seminars on topics such as vineyard management, pest control, and winemaking techniques.
- Publishing a quarterly newsletter that features articles on grape growing, winemaking, and industry news.
- Advocating for legislative and regulatory policies that support the growth of the grape and wine industry in Minnesota.
Cold-Hardy Grapes[edit | edit source]
One of the key focuses of the MGGA is the development and promotion of cold-hardy grape varieties that can withstand Minnesota's harsh winters. These varieties, such as Frontenac, La Crescent, and Marquette, have been developed through research and breeding programs, often in collaboration with the University of Minnesota.
Membership[edit | edit source]
Membership in the MGGA is open to anyone with an interest in grape growing and winemaking. Benefits of membership include access to educational resources, networking opportunities, and discounts on events and publications.
