Minties
Minties is a popular brand of confectionery originating from Australia and New Zealand. They are known for their distinctive, chewy texture and refreshing mint flavor. Minties were first produced in 1922 by James Stedman, son of the founder of the Stedman confectionery company.
History[edit | edit source]
James Stedman introduced Minties to the Australian market in 1922. The candy was initially manufactured by James Stedman-Henderson's Sweets Ltd, a subsidiary of the Stedman family's confectionery company. The brand was later acquired by Nestlé in 1985, and then by Darrell Lea in 2018.
Minties are notable for their marketing campaigns, particularly the slogan "It's moments like these you need Minties". This phrase has entered the Australian and New Zealand vernacular to refer to challenging or awkward situations.
Production[edit | edit source]
Minties are made by boiling sugar, glucose syrup, and water together, then adding peppermint oil for flavor. The mixture is then pulled into long, thin ropes, cut into small pieces, and wrapped in wax paper. The distinctive packaging features a series of humorous, cartoon "moments".
Cultural Impact[edit | edit source]
Minties have a significant cultural impact in Australia and New Zealand. They are often associated with nostalgia and have been a staple at children's parties, community events, and as a popular choice for Halloween treats. The brand's long history and distinctive marketing have made it a recognizable part of the region's confectionery landscape.
