Monotoca elliptica
Monotoca elliptica is a species of flowering plant in the family Ericaceae. It is commonly known as the tree broom heath. This plant is native to Australia, where it is found in coastal regions and nearby ranges of New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland.
Description[edit | edit source]
Monotoca elliptica is an evergreen shrub or small tree that typically grows to a height of 2 to 5 meters. The leaves are elliptic to lanceolate, measuring 1 to 3 cm in length and 0.5 to 1 cm in width. They are dark green on the upper surface and paler underneath, with a leathery texture. The plant produces small, white to cream-colored flowers that are arranged in dense, spike-like inflorescences. The flowering period is from late winter to early spring. The fruit is a small, globular drupe that turns red when ripe.
Habitat[edit | edit source]
This species is commonly found in coastal heathlands, woodlands, and forests. It prefers well-drained soils and can often be found growing in sandy or rocky substrates. Monotoca elliptica is adapted to a range of environmental conditions but is most commonly found in areas with a temperate climate.
Ecology[edit | edit source]
Monotoca elliptica plays a role in its ecosystem by providing habitat and food for various insects and birds. The flowers attract pollinators such as bees, while the fruits are consumed by birds, which help in seed dispersal. The plant is also known to be fire-resistant, which allows it to survive and regenerate after bushfires.
Cultivation[edit | edit source]
Monotoca elliptica is sometimes cultivated for ornamental purposes due to its attractive foliage and flowers. It can be grown in gardens that mimic its natural habitat, requiring well-drained soil and a sunny to partially shaded position. It is relatively low-maintenance and can be propagated from seed or cuttings.
