Montsant

Montsant is a Denominación de Origen Protegida (DOP) for wines located in the province of Tarragona (Catalonia, Spain), and covers 12 municipalities. It was previously known as Falset subzone of Tarragona DOP, and was created in 2001. The area is of increasing reputation for its high-quality red wines of Grenache and Carignan.

The Montsant DOP is located in the province of Tarragona in Catalonia and is named after the Montsant Massif, a mountain range that forms a semicircle to the north and west. The area is characterized by its unique limestone soils and Mediterranean climate.

History[edit | edit source]

The history of wine production in Montsant dates back to the Roman times. However, the area gained significant recognition in the wine industry when it was granted DOP status in 2001. Prior to this, it was a subzone of the Tarragona DOP and known as Falset.

Wine Production[edit | edit source]

The main grape varieties used in Montsant are Grenache and Carignan. Other varieties such as Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot are also used. The region is known for producing powerful red wines that are capable of aging and have high alcohol content.
