Monty Don

Monty Don (born 8 July 1955) is a British television presenter, gardener, and writer. He is best known for presenting the long-running BBC television series Gardeners' World.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Montagu Denis Wyatt Don was born in Iserlohn, West Germany, where his father was stationed as a career soldier. He grew up in Hampshire, England, and was educated at Quidhampton School, Marlborough College, and Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he studied English literature.

Before becoming a well-known television presenter, Monty Don worked in the jewelry business with his wife, Sarah. They ran a successful business in the 1980s, but it collapsed in the early 1990s, leading to financial difficulties.

Television Career[edit | edit source]

Monty Don's television career began in the early 1990s when he appeared on the Channel 4 television series This Morning. He later became a regular presenter on the BBC's Gardening programs, including Gardeners' World, which he began presenting in 2003. He has also presented other gardening-related programs such as Around the World in 80 Gardens, Monty Don's Italian Gardens, and Monty Don's French Gardens.

Monty Don is also a prolific writer, having authored several books on gardening. Some of his notable works include The Complete Gardener, The Jewel Garden, and Nigel: My Family and Other Dogs. He has also written for various newspapers and magazines, including The Observer and The Daily Mail.

Monty Don is married to Sarah Don, and they have three children. The couple resides in Herefordshire, where they maintain a large garden that has been featured in many of his television programs and books.

Awards and Recognition[edit | edit source]

Monty Don has received several awards for his contributions to gardening and broadcasting. He was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Victoria Medal of Honour in 2018.
