Ms contin
MS Contin is a brand name for the drug Morphine Sulfate Extended-Release, a potent opioid medication used for the management of severe, chronic pain that requires around-the-clock treatment. It is manufactured by Purdue Pharma.
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
Morphine, the active ingredient in MS Contin, is a powerful opioid analgesic that works by binding to mu-opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord. This binding action inhibits the transmission of pain signals, providing relief from severe pain. The extended-release formulation of MS Contin allows for a steady release of morphine over a 12-hour period, providing long-lasting pain relief.
Indications[edit | edit source]
MS Contin is indicated for the management of pain severe enough to require daily, around-the-clock, long-term opioid treatment and for which alternative treatment options are inadequate. It is typically used in patients with chronic conditions such as cancer, neuropathic pain, and end-stage renal disease.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Like all opioids, MS Contin has potential side effects. These can include nausea, vomiting, constipation, drowsiness, and respiratory depression. Long-term use can lead to opioid dependence and opioid use disorder.
Contraindications[edit | edit source]
MS Contin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to morphine, severe asthma or other respiratory problems, and paralytic ileus. It should be used with caution in patients with a history of substance abuse or mental illness.
