Mycoplasma pneumonia
Mycoplasma pneumonia is a type of bacterial pneumonia caused by the bacterium Mycoplasma pneumoniae. This bacterium is a common cause of respiratory tract infections, particularly in children and young adults.
Symptoms[edit | edit source]
The symptoms of Mycoplasma pneumonia can vary greatly, but typically include fever, cough, and malaise. Other symptoms may include sore throat, headache, and muscle aches. In severe cases, the infection can lead to pneumonia, which can cause shortness of breath, chest pain, and other serious complications.
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
Diagnosis of Mycoplasma pneumonia is typically made based on the patient's symptoms and a physical examination. Laboratory tests may also be used to confirm the diagnosis, including a blood test to check for the presence of antibodies to the bacterium, and a sputum culture to identify the bacterium itself.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment for Mycoplasma pneumonia typically involves antibiotics, such as doxycycline, erythromycin, or azithromycin. In severe cases, hospitalization may be required.
Prevention[edit | edit source]
Prevention of Mycoplasma pneumonia involves good hygiene practices, such as regular hand washing and avoiding close contact with infected individuals. There is currently no vaccine available for Mycoplasma pneumonia.
