'Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc., commonly known as Mylan, is an American pharmaceutical company that specializes in the production and distribution of generic and specialty drugs. Founded in 1961 by Milan Puskar and Don Panoz, the company initially operated as an independent entity before becoming a part of Viatris in 2020.

History[edit | edit source]

Mylan was established in 1961 in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia by Milan Puskar and Don Panoz. The company moved its base to Morgantown, West Virginia shortly after its founding. Over the decades, Mylan grew significantly, both organically and through acquisitions, expanding its product line and global reach.

In the 2000s, Mylan made several strategic acquisitions, including the purchase of Merck KGaA’s generic business in 2007, which significantly expanded its operations in Europe. In 2015, Mylan attempted a takeover of Perrigo, but the bid was unsuccessful.

In 2020, Mylan merged with Upjohn, Pfizer's off-patent branded and generic established medicines business, to form a new global healthcare company named Viatris.

Products[edit | edit source]

Mylan manufactures and distributes a wide range of generic and specialty pharmaceuticals. Some of its notable products include the EpiPen, an epinephrine auto-injector for treating anaphylaxis, and various generic drugs that serve as affordable alternatives to brand-name medications.

Controversies[edit | edit source]

Mylan has been involved in several controversies, including significant price hikes for its EpiPen product, which led to widespread public and political backlash. The company was criticized for classifying EpiPen as a generic product for Medicaid rebate purposes, which allegedly led to underpayment of rebates to the government.

Operations[edit | edit source]

Mylan operates globally, with manufacturing and R&D facilities in several countries. The company's headquarters are located in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, United States.
