NFYC (Nuclear transcription factor Y subunit gamma) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the NFYC gene. This protein is part of the Nuclear Factor Y (NF-Y) complex, which is a heterotrimeric transcription factor complex that binds to the CCAAT motif in the promoter regions of a variety of genes.

Function[edit | edit source]

The NFYC gene encodes the gamma subunit of the NF-Y complex. This complex is composed of three subunits: NF-YA, NF-YB, and NF-YC, which are encoded by separate genes. The NF-Y complex is involved in the regulation of a wide spectrum of genes, including those involved in cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, and DNA repair. The NFYC gene is essential for the formation of the NF-Y complex, as it interacts with the other two subunits to form a functional complex.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Mutations in the NFYC gene have been associated with various diseases. For example, a study found that a mutation in the NFYC gene was associated with microphthalmia, a condition characterized by abnormally small eyes. Another study found that overexpression of the NFYC gene was associated with poor prognosis in colorectal cancer patients.
