Nasion

Nasion is an anatomical term used in the field of Anthropology and Craniofacial surgery to describe a specific landmark on the human skull. The nasion is the midpoint of the Frontonasal suture, where the Frontal bone and two Nasal bones meet. This point is also the upper limit of the Nasal bridge.

Anatomy

The nasion is located between the eyes, at the intersection of the frontal and nasal bones. It is a significant point of reference in both anthropology and craniofacial surgery. In anthropological studies, the nasion is used as a standard craniometric point for measurements of the skull. In craniofacial surgery, the nasion is an important landmark for surgical procedures involving the nasal and frontal bones.

Clinical significance

The position of the nasion can vary greatly among individuals and ethnic groups, and this variation can have significant implications for both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. For example, a low or depressed nasion can result in a flat or saddle-nose deformity, while a high nasion can give the appearance of a prominent or humped nose. Surgeons may modify the position of the nasion during Rhinoplasty or other facial surgeries to improve the patient's appearance or to correct deformities.
