Natalia Molchanova
Natalia Molchanova (8 May 1962 – August 2015) was a Russian freediving athlete, considered one of the greatest freedivers in history. She held 41 world records and was the reigning world champion in freediving at the time of her disappearance in August 2015.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Molchanova was born on 8 May 1962 in Ulyanovsk, Russia. She graduated from the Ulyanovsk State University with a degree in Physical Education.
Career[edit | edit source]
Molchanova began her career in competitive swimming but switched to freediving in 2002. She quickly rose to prominence in the sport, setting numerous world records and winning multiple world championships. Her achievements include the first woman to break the 100-meter barrier in the Constant Weight discipline and the first woman to dive below 70 meters in the Free Immersion discipline.
Disappearance[edit | edit source]
On 2 August 2015, Molchanova disappeared during a recreational dive off the coast of Formentera, Spain. Despite extensive search efforts, her body was never recovered, and she is presumed to have died.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Molchanova's contributions to the sport of freediving have been widely recognized. She is remembered not only for her athletic achievements but also for her efforts to promote safety and education in freediving. The Natalia Molchanova Grand Prix, an annual freediving competition, was established in her honor.
