Nathan Pritikin

Nathan Pritikin (August 20, 1915 – February 21, 1985) was an American inventor, nutritionist and longevity researcher. He is best known for the Pritikin Diet, a low-fat, high-fiber diet that he developed to combat his own health issues.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Nathan Pritikin was born in Chicago, Illinois. He showed an early interest in science and technology, and went on to study engineering at the University of Chicago.

Career[edit | edit source]

Pritikin began his career as an inventor, holding several patents in fields such as photography and engineering. However, his career took a dramatic turn in the 1950s when he was diagnosed with heart disease.

In response to his diagnosis, Pritikin began researching nutrition and its impact on health. He developed the Pritikin Diet, a low-fat, high-fiber diet that emphasizes whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. The diet was designed to lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and to prevent and reverse heart disease.

Pritikin's work in nutrition and longevity research led to the establishment of the Pritikin Longevity Center, a residential health and wellness facility that continues to promote the Pritikin Diet and lifestyle.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Pritikin's work has had a significant impact on the field of nutrition and health. His diet has been studied extensively and has been shown to have numerous health benefits, including reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.

Despite his death in 1985, the Pritikin Longevity Center continues to operate and promote his dietary and lifestyle principles. His son, Robert Pritikin, has also continued his father's work, authoring several books on the Pritikin Diet and lifestyle.
