The National Rugby League (NRL) is the top professional rugby league club competition in Australasia. Run by the Australian Rugby League Commission, the NRL's main competition is contested by sixteen teams, fifteen of which are based in Australia with one based in New Zealand. The NRL is regarded as the world's elite rugby league championship and is the premier rugby league club competition in the Southern Hemisphere.

History[edit | edit source]

The NRL was formed in 1998 as a joint partnership between the Australian Rugby League (ARL) and News Corporation-controlled Super League, following the Super League war of the mid-1990s. The competition was a merger of the two rival competitions, the ARL and the Super League, which had split the sport in Australia.

Competition Format[edit | edit source]

The NRL season is divided into a regular season and a finals series. The regular season typically runs from March to September, with each team playing 24 matches. The top eight teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the finals series, culminating in the NRL Grand Final, which is one of Australia's most popular sporting events.

Regular Season[edit | edit source]

The regular season is played over 25 rounds, with each team playing 24 matches and having one bye. Teams are awarded two points for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a loss. The teams are ranked on the ladder based on their total points, with points differential (points scored minus points conceded) used as a tiebreaker.

Finals Series[edit | edit source]

The finals series is played over four weeks, using the Page-McIntyre system, which rewards the top four teams with a "second chance" if they lose in the first week. The series culminates in the NRL Grand Final, held at Stadium Australia in Sydney.

Teams[edit | edit source]

The NRL consists of 16 teams:

Player Development and Welfare[edit | edit source]

The NRL places a strong emphasis on player welfare and development. The league has implemented various programs to support players' education, career development, and mental health. The NRL also runs the National Youth Competition to develop young talent.

Impact and Popularity[edit | edit source]

The NRL is one of the most popular sports leagues in Australia, with a significant following in New Zealand as well. The league has a strong television presence, with matches broadcast nationally and internationally. The NRL Grand Final is a major event in the Australian sporting calendar, attracting millions of viewers.
