Nehi is a brand of flavored soft drinks that originated in the United States. The Nehi Soda Company was established in the early 1920s by Claud A. Hatcher, a grocery store owner in Columbus, Georgia. The brand became notable for its range of fruit-flavored sodas, which included grape, orange, and peach among others. Nehi was introduced in 1924 as a new line of fruit-flavored beverages, which quickly became popular across the country due to their unique flavors and colorful advertising.

History[edit | edit source]

The Nehi Corporation was originally known as the Chero-Cola Co., which was founded by Claud A. Hatcher in 1912. The company initially focused on its namesake product, Chero-Cola, but with the introduction of the Nehi line of fruit-flavored sodas in 1924, the brand's popularity soared. The success of Nehi helped the company to expand rapidly during the 1920s and 1930s. In 1955, the company changed its name to the Royal Crown Company, after its new cola product, Royal Crown Cola, which became a direct competitor to Coca-Cola and Pepsi.

Product Range[edit | edit source]

Nehi offered a wide variety of flavors, including but not limited to, orange, grape, root beer, peach, and cherry. The brand was known for its bright, colorful packaging and distinctive flavors. The variety of flavors ensured that Nehi had a broad appeal, catering to the tastes of a wide audience.

Cultural Impact[edit | edit source]

Nehi has been referenced in various aspects of popular culture, most notably in the television series M*A*S*H, where the character Radar O'Reilly frequently mentions drinking Grape Nehi. This kind of product placement helped to cement Nehi's place in American pop culture as a beloved soft drink.

Decline and Legacy[edit | edit source]

Despite its initial success, the popularity of Nehi sodas has waned over the years. The brand has been overshadowed by the larger soda companies and their global marketing campaigns. However, Nehi remains a nostalgic favorite among collectors and enthusiasts of vintage and retro products. Today, Nehi sodas are still produced and sold, primarily in the United States, appealing to those who remember the brand from its heyday or those discovering it for the first time as a novelty.
