Neptunia oleracea

From WikiMD's Wellnesspedia

Neptunia oleracea is a species of aquatic plant in the Fabaceae family, commonly known as water mimosa or sensitive neptunia. It is native to South America, Central America, and Mexico, but has been introduced to other regions, including Southeast Asia, where it is cultivated as a vegetable.

Description[edit | edit source]

Neptunia oleracea is a perennial plant that grows in water or damp soil. It has a creeping habit, with stems that can reach up to 5 meters in length. The leaves are bipinnate, with small, oblong leaflets that close when touched, hence the common name "sensitive neptunia". The flowers are yellow and arranged in spherical clusters.

Cultivation and uses[edit | edit source]

In Southeast Asia, Neptunia oleracea is grown as a vegetable. The young shoots and leaves are harvested and used in a variety of dishes. They can be eaten raw in salads, or cooked in soups and stir-fries. The plant is also used in traditional medicine in some cultures.

Invasive species[edit | edit source]

While Neptunia oleracea is valued as a food source in some regions, it is considered an invasive species in others. It can form dense mats that cover the surface of water bodies, blocking light and reducing oxygen levels, which can have a negative impact on other aquatic life.
