Nick Lane
Nick Lane is a British biochemist and writer. He is a professor in evolutionary biochemistry at University College London (UCL). Lane is known for his research on the role of bioenergetics in the origin and evolution of life.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Nick Lane was born in London, England. He studied biochemistry at Imperial College London, where he earned his BSc degree. He later completed his PhD at the Royal Free Hospital Medical School, which is now part of UCL Medical School.
Career[edit | edit source]
Lane's research focuses on the role of bioenergetics in the origin and evolution of life. He has made significant contributions to our understanding of how life might have originated from simple chemical reactions. His work often explores the interface between chemistry and biology, particularly how energy flow through living systems drives biological processes.
Research and Contributions[edit | edit source]
Lane has proposed several influential hypotheses, including the idea that life originated at hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor. He has also explored the role of mitochondria in the evolution of complex life forms. His research suggests that the energy demands of complex cells could only be met by the symbiotic relationship between primitive eukaryotic cells and mitochondria.
Publications[edit | edit source]
Nick Lane is the author of several popular science books that have been widely acclaimed. Some of his notable works include:
- Oxygen: The Molecule that Made the World
- Power, Sex, Suicide: Mitochondria and the Meaning of Life
- Life Ascending: The Ten Great Inventions of Evolution
- The Vital Question: Energy, Evolution, and the Origins of Complex Life
Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]
Lane has received numerous awards for his contributions to science and science communication. He was awarded the Michael Faraday Award by the Royal Society for his excellence in communicating science to the public. He has also been recognized with the Biochemical Society Award and the Royal Society of Biology Book Award.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Nick Lane lives in London with his family. He continues to teach and conduct research at University College London.
