Nicotine pouch

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Nicotine pouches are white pre-portioned pouches containing either tobacco derived nicotine or synthetic nicotine, but no tobacco leaf, dust, or stem, and are described as either similar to or a tobacco-free version of snus.

History[edit | edit source]

Nicotine pouches are a recent innovation, with the first products released in the mid-2010s. The first nicotine pouches were introduced in Sweden in 2014 by Swedish Match under the brand name ZYN, which was introduced in the United States in 2019.

Usage[edit | edit source]

Nicotine pouches are used by placing a pouch between the upper lip and gum, and the nicotine and taste is released when the pouch becomes moist. The pouch is then discarded in household trash after use.

Health effects[edit | edit source]

The health effects of nicotine pouches are not yet fully known, as they are a relatively new product. However, they are generally considered to be less harmful than traditional tobacco products.

Regulation[edit | edit source]

In the United States, nicotine pouches are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In the European Union, they are regulated under the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD).
