Near-Infrared (NIR)[edit | edit source]

Near-Infrared (NIR) refers to a region of the electromagnetic spectrum that encompasses wavelengths from approximately 700 nm to 2500 nm. This range lies just beyond the visible spectrum and is not detectable by the human eye. NIR is widely used in various scientific, industrial, and medical applications due to its unique properties.

Properties[edit | edit source]

NIR radiation has longer wavelengths than visible light but shorter wavelengths than mid-infrared and far-infrared radiation. This allows NIR to penetrate deeper into materials, making it useful for applications such as spectroscopy, imaging, and remote sensing.

Applications[edit | edit source]

Medical[edit | edit source]

In the medical field, NIR is used in near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to monitor oxygenation levels in tissues, which is crucial for assessing brain function and muscle metabolism. NIR imaging is also employed in diagnostic imaging to detect abnormalities in tissues.

Industrial[edit | edit source]

NIR spectroscopy is extensively used in the food industry for quality control and composition analysis. It is also applied in the pharmaceutical industry to ensure the consistency and quality of products.

Scientific[edit | edit source]

In astronomy, NIR is used to observe celestial objects that are not visible in the optical range. NIR telescopes can detect heat emitted by stars and galaxies, providing valuable information about their composition and structure.

Advantages[edit | edit source]

NIR has several advantages over other forms of radiation:

  • Non-destructive: NIR does not damage the sample being analyzed.
  • Penetrative: NIR can penetrate deeper into materials compared to visible light.
  • Rapid: NIR spectroscopy provides quick and accurate results.
