Nodular vasculitis

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Nodular Vasculitis is a chronic form of vasculitis that primarily affects the lower legs of middle-aged women. It is characterized by the presence of painful, erythematous or violaceous nodules. The exact cause of nodular vasculitis is unknown, but it is thought to be related to an abnormal immune response.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The primary symptom of nodular vasculitis is the presence of painful, erythematous or violaceous nodules on the lower legs. These nodules may be solitary or multiple, and they often recur after treatment. Other symptoms may include fever, malaise, and weight loss.

Causes[edit | edit source]

The exact cause of nodular vasculitis is unknown. It is thought to be related to an abnormal immune response, possibly triggered by an infection or exposure to certain drugs. Some researchers believe that nodular vasculitis may be a form of tuberculosis or sarcoidosis, but this is not universally accepted.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

The diagnosis of nodular vasculitis is based on the clinical presentation and histopathological findings. A biopsy of the affected skin is typically performed, which shows inflammation of the blood vessels (vasculitis) and granuloma formation.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment of nodular vasculitis is aimed at reducing inflammation and preventing recurrence. This may involve the use of anti-inflammatory drugs, immunosuppressive agents, or antibiotics. In severe cases, surgical removal of the affected skin may be necessary.

Prognosis[edit | edit source]

The prognosis for nodular vasculitis is generally good, although the condition can be chronic and recurrent. With appropriate treatment, most patients experience a significant reduction in symptoms and improvement in quality of life.
