Norethisterone ester

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Norethisterone ester is a type of progestogen ester, specifically a synthetic derivative of testosterone. It is used in hormone replacement therapy, contraceptive methods, and in the treatment of various gynecological disorders.

Chemistry[edit | edit source]

Norethisterone ester is a steroid and a derivative of testosterone. It is more specifically a derivative of 17α-ethynyltestosterone (ethisterone), or of norethisterone, the 17β-deacetylated metabolite of norethisterone acetate. Norethisterone ester is a progestogen ester – a progestogen with an ester substituent at the C17β position.

Medical uses[edit | edit source]

Norethisterone ester is used in hormone replacement therapy for menopausal symptoms, and in contraceptive methods. It is also used in the treatment of endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and other gynecological disorders.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

As a progestogen, norethisterone ester has anti-estrogen effects. It works by binding to and activating the progesterone receptor, which then modulates the expression of certain genes in target tissues. This results in a decrease in the effects of estrogen in the body.

Side effects[edit | edit source]

Possible side effects of norethisterone ester include menstrual irregularities, nausea, breast tenderness, and headache. In rare cases, it may cause jaundice and liver problems.
