O-Methylphenethylamine

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

O-Methylphenethylamine (also known as 3-Methoxyamphetamine or 3-MeOA) is a chemical compound and a substituted amphetamine. It is a methylated derivative of phenethylamine, but unlike many other phenethylamine derivatives, it does not have any psychoactive properties.

Chemistry[edit | edit source]

O-Methylphenethylamine is a phenethylamine derivative, which is a large family of organic compounds. It is structurally similar to amphetamine, but has a methoxy group (-O-CH3) attached to the phenyl ring, instead of the methyl group (-CH3) attached to the alpha carbon in amphetamine. This structural difference makes O-Methylphenethylamine non-psychoactive.

Synthesis[edit | edit source]

The synthesis of O-Methylphenethylamine can be achieved through the methylation of phenethylamine. This process involves the addition of a methyl group to the phenyl ring of phenethylamine, typically using a reagent such as methyl iodide and a base like potassium carbonate.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Despite its structural similarity to amphetamine and other psychoactive phenethylamine derivatives, O-Methylphenethylamine does not have any significant central nervous system activity. This is likely due to the presence of the methoxy group, which prevents the compound from crossing the blood-brain barrier.

Toxicity[edit | edit source]

The toxicity of O-Methylphenethylamine is not well-studied. However, due to its structural similarity to other phenethylamine derivatives, it is possible that it could have similar toxic effects at high doses or with chronic use. As with all chemicals, it should be handled with care and appropriate safety precautions.
