Olaf Kölzig
Olaf Kölzig (born April 6, 1970) is a retired German professional ice hockey goaltender and current goaltending coach. He played the majority of his career with the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL). Kölzig is widely regarded as one of the best goaltenders in the history of the Capitals franchise.
Early Life and Career[edit | edit source]
Kölzig was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, but grew up in Canada. He began his junior hockey career with the Tri-City Americans of the Western Hockey League (WHL). His impressive performances in the WHL led to his selection by the Washington Capitals in the first round, 19th overall, of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft.
NHL Career[edit | edit source]
Kölzig made his NHL debut with the Capitals during the 1989-90 NHL season. However, he spent the majority of his early career in the minor leagues, including stints with the Baltimore Skipjacks and the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League (AHL).
Kölzig became the Capitals' starting goaltender during the 1997-98 NHL season, leading the team to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in franchise history. Although the Capitals were defeated by the Detroit Red Wings, Kölzig's performance was highly praised.
In the 1999-2000 NHL season, Kölzig won the Vezina Trophy as the league's best goaltender. He was also selected to the NHL All-Star Game in 1998 and 2000.

Kölzig represented Germany in several international competitions, including the Winter Olympics and the IIHF World Championships. He played a key role in Germany's success in international hockey during his career.
Retirement and Coaching Career[edit | edit source]
Kölzig retired from professional hockey after the 2008-09 NHL season. Following his retirement, he transitioned into a coaching role, becoming the goaltending coach for the Washington Capitals. He has also been involved in various charitable activities, including his work with the Olaf Kölzig Foundation.

Kölzig is married and has three children. He is known for his philanthropic efforts, particularly in the area of autism awareness, inspired by his son's diagnosis with the condition.
