Orlando Henderson Petty
Orlando Henderson Petty (February 20, 1874 – December 2, 1932) was an American physician and a recipient of the Medal of Honor for his service during World War I. He was recognized for his extraordinary heroism while serving as a lieutenant commander in the United States Navy.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Orlando Henderson Petty was born on February 20, 1874, in Chester, Pennsylvania. He pursued his medical education at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his medical degree.
Military Service[edit | edit source]
Petty joined the United States Navy and served as a lieutenant commander during World War I. His most notable act of heroism occurred during the Battle of Belleau Wood in June 1918. Despite being severely wounded, Petty continued to provide medical assistance to his fellow soldiers, an act that earned him the Medal of Honor.

The official citation for Petty's Medal of Honor reads: "For extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty while serving with the Fifth Regiment, United States Marine Corps, in France, on June 11, 1918. During an intense enemy bombardment, Lieutenant Commander Petty, although severely wounded, continued to administer first aid to the wounded, thereby saving many lives."
Later Life and Death[edit | edit source]
After the war, Petty continued his medical practice and contributed to various medical advancements. He passed away on December 2, 1932, and was buried with full military honors.
