Oumar Mariko
Oumar Mariko (born 4 February 1959) is a Malian politician and physician. He is the leader of the African Solidarity for Democracy and Independence (SADI) party and has been a prominent figure in Malian politics for several decades.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Oumar Mariko was born in Bafoulabé, a town in the Kayes Region of Mali. He pursued his higher education in medicine and became a qualified physician. Mariko's involvement in politics began during his university years, where he was an active member of student movements.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Mariko's political career took off in the early 1990s. He was a key figure in the 1991 Malian coup d'état that led to the overthrow of Moussa Traoré. Following the coup, Mariko became involved in the transitional government and played a significant role in the establishment of a democratic system in Mali.
In 1996, Mariko founded the African Solidarity for Democracy and Independence (SADI) party. The party is known for its leftist ideology and has been a vocal critic of the government. Mariko has run for the presidency multiple times, including in the 2002, 2013, and 2018 elections.
Activism and Controversies[edit | edit source]
Mariko is known for his activism and has been involved in various protests and movements against government policies. He has been arrested multiple times for his participation in demonstrations and his outspoken criticism of the government.
In 2012, during the Northern Mali conflict, Mariko was a vocal critic of the government's handling of the situation. He called for a more robust response to the Tuareg rebellion and the presence of Islamist groups in the region.

Oumar Mariko is married and has children. Despite his busy political career, he continues to practice medicine and is involved in various healthcare initiatives in Mali.
