Paul Janssen (1926-2003) was a renowned Belgian pharmacologist and physician, best known for his significant contributions to the field of pharmacology. He was the founder of Janssen Pharmaceutica, a pharmaceutical company that has made significant strides in drug development.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Paul Janssen was born on September 12, 1926, in Turnhout, Belgium. He pursued his early education in his hometown before moving to Leuven, where he studied at the Catholic University of Leuven. He graduated with a degree in medicine in 1951.

Career[edit]

After completing his education, Janssen founded his own research laboratory in 1953, which later became Janssen Pharmaceutica. His company was responsible for the development of more than 80 medicines, some of which are still widely used today. His most notable work includes the development of the anti-diarrheal medication Imodium (Loperamide), the antipsychotic Haldol (Haloperidol), and the opioid analgesic Fentanyl.
