Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry

The Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry (PCMD) was a medical and dental school located in the United Kingdom. It was a collaboration between the University of Exeter and the University of Plymouth, and was established in 2000. PCMD aimed to provide high-quality medical and dental education, research, and clinical practice in the South West of England.

History[edit | edit source]

The idea for Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry originated from a partnership between the University of Exeter and the University of Plymouth. The two universities recognized the need for a medical and dental school in the South West of England to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in the region. In 2000, PCMD was officially established, with the first cohort of students admitted in 2002.

Courses and Programs[edit | edit source]

PCMD offered a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in medicine and dentistry. The undergraduate programs included Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degrees. These programs provided students with a comprehensive education in the theory and practice of medicine and dentistry.

In addition to the undergraduate programs, PCMD also offered postgraduate courses for medical and dental professionals looking to further their education and specialize in specific areas. These courses included Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, as well as various diploma and certificate programs.

Research and Innovation[edit | edit source]

Research was a key focus at PCMD, with the institution actively promoting and supporting research activities. The college had several research centers and institutes dedicated to various areas of medical and dental research, including cancer research, neuroscience, and oral health.

PCMD also encouraged collaboration and partnerships with other research institutions and organizations, both nationally and internationally. This allowed for the exchange of knowledge and expertise, fostering innovation and advancements in medical and dental sciences.

Facilities and Campus[edit | edit source]

The main campus of PCMD was located in Plymouth, with additional teaching facilities in Exeter. The college had state-of-the-art lecture theaters, laboratories, and clinical skills facilities to support the education and training of its students. The campus also provided access to a range of clinical settings, including hospitals and dental clinics, where students could gain practical experience.

Closure[edit | edit source]

In 2013, it was announced that Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry would be dissolved. The University of Exeter and the University of Plymouth decided to end their partnership, leading to the closure of PCMD. The decision was made due to financial challenges and changes in the higher education landscape.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Despite its closure, Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry left a lasting impact on medical and dental education in the South West of England. Many of its former students and faculty members continue to contribute to the healthcare sector, both locally and globally. The collaboration between the University of Exeter and the University of Plymouth paved the way for future partnerships and initiatives in medical and dental education.
