Penny Pritzker

Penny Pritzker (born May 2, 1959) is an American billionaire businesswoman, entrepreneur, and civic leader. She served as the 38th United States Secretary of Commerce from June 26, 2013, to January 20, 2017, under President Barack Obama. Pritzker is a member of the Pritzker family, one of the wealthiest families in the United States, known for founding the Hyatt Hotels Corporation.

Penny Pritzker was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Donald Pritzker and Sue Sandel. She attended Castilleja School in Palo Alto, California. Pritzker earned her B.A. in Economics from Harvard University in 1981 and her J.D. and M.B.A. from Stanford University in 1985.

Business Ventures[edit | edit source]

Pritzker began her career in business by founding Classic Residence by Hyatt, now known as Vi, a luxury senior living management company. She also co-founded The Parking Spot, a network of off-airport parking facilities, and Pritzker Realty Group, a real estate investment firm.

Civic Leadership[edit | edit source]

Pritzker has been actively involved in various civic and philanthropic activities. She served as a member of the Chicago Board of Education and was a trustee of Stanford University. Pritzker is also a co-founder of Skills for America's Future, an initiative aimed at improving workforce training.

Secretary of Commerce[edit | edit source]

In 2013, Pritzker was nominated by President Barack Obama to serve as the United States Secretary of Commerce. During her tenure, she focused on promoting American businesses, enhancing trade relationships, and fostering innovation. Pritzker played a key role in the implementation of the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the SelectUSA program, which aims to attract foreign investment to the United States.
