Percent Daily Value

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Percent Daily Value (%DV) is a guide to the nutrients in one serving of food. It is a term used in the United States and Canada for the amount of a nutrient provided by a serving of food, in relation to the daily recommended amount.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Percent Daily Values are based on a 2,000 calorie diet for healthy adults. The actual daily values may be higher or lower depending on the individual's calorie needs. The values for nutrients like protein, dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals are based on public health experts' advice.

Calculation[edit | edit source]

The %DV is calculated by dividing the amount of a nutrient in a serving of food by its daily value, then multiplying that number by 100. For example, if a food has 3 grams of fiber, the %DV is calculated as follows: (3g ÷ 28g) × 100 = 11%.

Labeling[edit | edit source]

The %DV is listed in the Nutrition Facts panel of packaged foods. It helps consumers understand the nutrition information in the context of a total daily diet.

Criticism[edit | edit source]

Critics argue that the %DV system is confusing and not helpful to consumers. They suggest that it should be replaced with a simpler system.
