pH-metry is the process of measuring the acidity or alkalinity of a solution, quantitatively. It is a widely used analytical technique in chemistry, biology, environmental science, and various industries such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and water treatment. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. Solutions with a pH less than 7 are considered acidic, while those with a pH greater than 7 are alkaline or basic.

Principles of pH-metry[edit | edit source]

The measurement of pH is based on the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) in a solution. The pH value is calculated using the formula: \[ \text{pH} = -\log_{10}[\text{H}^+] \] where \([\text{H}^+]\) is the molar concentration of hydrogen ions in the solution. This relationship was first introduced by the Danish chemist Søren Sørensen in 1909.

pH Measurement Devices[edit | edit source]

The most common device for measuring pH is the pH meter, which consists of a glass electrode and a reference electrode. The glass electrode contains a special glass membrane that is sensitive to hydrogen ion concentration. When the electrode is immersed in a solution, a potential difference is created between the glass and reference electrodes, which is then converted into a pH value by the meter.

pH-metry has a wide range of applications across various fields:

  • In environmental science, it is used to monitor the acidity of rainwater and the health of aquatic ecosystems.
  • In the food and beverage industry, pH-metry is crucial for ensuring the safety and quality of products.
  • In medicine, it is used to diagnose and monitor conditions such as acidosis and alkalosis.
  • In agriculture, soil pH is measured to determine the suitability for certain crops and to guide fertilization practices.

Calibration and Maintenance[edit | edit source]

For accurate pH measurements, pH meters must be regularly calibrated using buffer solutions of known pH values. The glass electrode also requires proper maintenance and cleaning to prevent contamination and ensure reliable readings.

Challenges in pH-metry[edit | edit source]

Despite its widespread use, pH-metry can present challenges, such as:

  • Temperature sensitivity: pH readings can be affected by temperature, requiring temperature compensation for accurate measurements.
  • Electrode maintenance: Glass electrodes are fragile and can be damaged by harsh chemicals or mechanical stress.
  • Interference: The presence of heavy metals or other ions can interfere with the measurement, leading to inaccurate results.
