Phall-O-Meter
Phall-O-Meter is a diagnostic tool used in the field of medicine to measure the size of the phallus in newborns. It was developed by the Intersex Society of North America (ISNA) as a satirical critique of the medical community's approach to intersex conditions.
History[edit | edit source]
The Phall-O-Meter was created by the ISNA in the 1990s. The organization developed the tool to highlight the arbitrary nature of surgical decisions made for intersex children. The Phall-O-Meter is a small, plastic, sliding scale that measures the size of a newborn's phallus in millimeters. It is used to determine whether the child's phallus is "large enough" to be considered a penis or "small enough" to be considered a clitoris.
Criticism[edit | edit source]
The Phall-O-Meter has been criticized for reinforcing binary gender norms and for its role in non-consensual surgeries on intersex children. Critics argue that the tool is used to justify unnecessary and harmful surgeries that are often performed without the child's consent.
