Portland State University (PSU) is a public university located in the heart of Portland, Oregon, United States. It is the largest and most diverse university in the Oregon University System, offering more than 200 undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees through nine colleges and schools. Portland State University was founded in 1946 as the Vanport Extension Center to satisfy the higher education needs of returning World War II veterans. Initially located in Vanport, Oregon, the institution moved to downtown Portland in 1952 after the Vanport flood destroyed the original campus. It became a four-year college in 1955 and was granted university status in 1969, becoming Portland State University.
