In 1908, Rev. Hugh A. Cooper, a Presbyterian pastor in Albuquerque, founded the Southwest Presbyterian Sanatorium to treat tuberculosis patients. By 1950, with tuberculosis under control, its future became uncertain. The institution hired a professional hospital administrator and was renamed The Presbyterian Hospital Center. The hospital continued to grow and expand through the 1960s and 1970s, eventually becoming the present-day Presbyterian Hospital.
