Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany (Leopold George Duncan Albert; 7 April 1853 – 28 March 1884) was the eighth child and youngest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He was diagnosed with hemophilia, which led to his premature death at the age of 30.
Early life[edit | edit source]
Prince Leopold was born on 7 April 1853 at Buckingham Palace in London. He was baptized in the private chapel of Buckingham Palace on 28 June 1853. His godparents included King George V of Hanover and Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge.
Education[edit | edit source]
Leopold was educated at home by private tutors. He later attended Christ Church, Oxford, where he developed a keen interest in the arts and sciences. Despite his health issues, he was an active member of the university community and was involved in various academic pursuits.
Health[edit | edit source]
Leopold inherited the genetic disorder hemophilia from his mother, Queen Victoria. This condition, which impairs the blood's ability to clot, led to frequent health issues and ultimately contributed to his early death.
Marriage and family[edit | edit source]
On 27 April 1882, Leopold married Princess Helena of Waldeck and Pyrmont at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. The couple had two children:
- Princess Alice (1883–1981)
- Charles Edward (1884–1954)
Death[edit | edit source]
Prince Leopold died on 28 March 1884 in Cannes, France, after a fall that resulted in a hemorrhage. He was buried in St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Leopold's life and untimely death brought significant attention to the condition of hemophilia, which affected several members of European royal families. His descendants continued to play important roles in European history.
