Propiomazine

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Propiomazine is a sedative and antihistamine that belongs to the phenothiazine class of drugs. It is primarily used for the treatment of insomnia and is marketed under various brand names such as Largon, Propavan and Serentin.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Propiomazine is a phenothiazine, but unlike typical phenothiazines, it is used primarily as a sedative. It does not have antipsychotic effects. The drug is a strong H1 receptor antagonist, which means it works by blocking the action of histamine in the body. This action is responsible for its sedative effects.

Medical uses[edit | edit source]

Propiomazine is primarily used for the treatment of insomnia. It helps to reduce difficulty in falling asleep and increase the length of sleep. It is also used for preoperative sedation. It can be used in combination with other medications for anesthesia.

Side effects[edit | edit source]

Like other phenothiazines, propiomazine can cause a variety of side effects. These can include drowsiness, dizziness, and dry mouth. In rare cases, it can cause severe side effects such as tardive dyskinesia, a condition characterized by involuntary movements.
